As linking the imminent talents around the globe to Chelsea continues, another competent 20-year-old Left Back has been recently linked to the English Champions by L’Equipe, a French daily.
Ghanaian left back Abdul Rahman Baba, currently plies his trade for FC Augsburg in Bundesliga. He has helped Augsburg secure a place in next season’s Europa League after their surprising fifth place finish in the German League. He also led Ghana in the Under-20 World Cup in 2013.
Abdul Rahman Baba began his career representing Dreams FC in Ghana Division Two, where impressive performances earned him a loan move to Asante Kotoko Sporting Club in the Ghana Premier League. After being nominated for the League’s Discovery of the Year award in 2012, Baba signed for newly promoted Bundesliga side SpVgg Greuther Furth. Eventually in 2014, he signed for FC Augsburg.
This season, Baba made 29 appearances for Augsburg, making 4 assists from the left back position. With his blistering pace and dribbling ability, Baba has completed a total of 44 out of 67 take-ons, with a 66% success rate. Displaying his aerial prowess, Baba has won 77 of his attempted 115 headed duels, recording an impressive 67%. His proficiency to deliver crosses from wide areas has helped him to get 4 assists to his name along with contributing to goals with 20 key passes.
Baba was successful in impressing the scouts throughout the last season, but his most eye-catching performance was against Bayern Munich, when Augsburg defeated The Bavarians 1-0 at the Allianz Arena. Along with a 75% successful tackle rate and 2 vital interceptions, Baba kept the team’s rear guarded, against the dangerous Mario Gotze and Muller.
Baba was voted Augsburg’s Player of the month in November, and Bayern’s star Xabi Alonso stated in an interview to whoscored.com,
“Looks like he has the ability to become a top left back and might even be better suited as a left wing back. He should have a lot more assists to be fair, but been let down by his finishing of his team mates at times, but Augsburg have started the season off very well.”
According to L’Equipe, Chelsea are interested in signing the Ghanaian, with AS Roma, Manchester City, Juventus and Borussia Dortmund also reportedly monitoring the youngster. Chelsea’s regular left back Cesar Azpilicueta is naturally a right back, while back-up left back Filipe Luis hasn’t impressed enough to earn more than a handful of appearances. Chelsea could do with a regular left back, and while the 20 year old isn’t yet the absolute polished material, Jose Mourinho’s guidance can push him towards stardom.
With 29 year old Filipe Luis likely to leave, Chelsea could very well do with another left back, who could give Azpilicueta some stiff competition for a position in the starting lineup. And the talented Ghanaian seems like the perfect player for the position in the already star-studded and solid Chelsea’s defensive lineup!
