I don’t think any other player has a more divided opinion among Chelsea fans as much as John Obi Mikel. Maybe Ramires comes close second? Not sure about that but, the Nigerian midfielder definitely tops this list!
There’s one side of the argument where Mikel is constantly criticized for his one-dimensional plays and sideways passing; not to mention his complete lack of ability to help us in the attack (his stats definitely support this argument!) However, there’s also another side of the argument which proves that he is a very good and under appreciated utility player!
Consider this; he is not a World Class player and he definitely doesn’t demand a start every game. A backup or a utility player can never be world class because a top player wouldn’t settle for a place on the bench and Mikel probably knows this.
As it is obvious, a backup or a utility player can never be world class because a top player wouldn’t settle for a place on the bench and Mikel probably knows this. Mourinho has mostly used Mikel in the latter stages of a game when there has been a need to close down the shop. Undoubtedly, the Nigerian has been pretty good at that role! But does that guarantee him a place in our side when we have talented youngsters like RLC, Chalobah, Romeu, Van Ginkel etc. waiting on the fringes?
I think that topic is still up for debate! Although lately, there have been some sources linking our backup DM to the UAE side Al Ain. In the wake of Falcao and Cech’s situation, the Mikel rumors might have died down a bit but Asamoah Gyan has made sure they resurface once again by the following statement:
“I heard it this week that he (Mikel Obi) has agreed terms with Al Ain and will most definitely be playing for us next season. It’s great news for us because Mikel Obi is a very good player and very experienced. It will be exciting playing with him in the same team, because I believe both of us, with the help of our other colleagues can do more for the club.”

While I am not sure if Mikel has actually agreed any terms with the UAE league champions there’s also no denying that approaches have been made from Al Ain in the past few weeks. To be fair, Mikel has been linked to a Chelsea exit for the better part of his time here at the Bridge. Yet, the Nigerian has survived a plethora of managerial changes and has managed to win every club trophy there is to be offered! Impressive, eh?
But is it the right time for our loyal servant to finally move away from home? Or is he still valuable enough to deserve a place in our line-up? We would probably have the answer in the next few weeks. Meanwhile, what do you guys think? Comment away your opinions!
