Reports claim that owner Roman Abramovic is pushing forward with plans to expand Stamford Bridge’s capacity to around 60,000.
This would increase the clubs matchday revenue collection and would help the club to comply with UEFA’s Financial Fair Play rule. It would also make Stamford Bridge almost as big as the Emirates and Old Trafford.
Bridge’s current capacity is 41,798, which leaves them lagging behind other big clubs in this country and Europe. They have been searching for ways to expand for some time now. They have ruled out a permanent move though.
The Premier League Champions have invited season-ticket holders, members and neighbours to an exhibition of their plans at the end of this month.
After watching his friend and tennis star Rafael Nadal lose in the opening round of the AEGON Championships in London, Mourinho told BBC Sport that he was pleased about the plans to increase the size of Chelsea’s stadium.
“I think it’s the next step for Chelsea. Chelsea won four Premier Leagues in the last decade, we’ve become a huge club. Stamford Bridge is always full, and we feel that need [to expand],” Mourinho said.
“I trust Mr Abramovich and the board. I don’t think too much about these details — my focus is the work on the pitch. We will have capacity for more fans and I think that is what Chelsea is waiting for.”
But such a big renovation work also means that Chelsea cannot be using the Bridge for about 4 years according to the estimates. Reports suggest that Chelsea could be using the Wembley or Twickenham as a possible home, though discussions have been preliminary. Among the ideas under consideration by Chelsea is to dig down to produce another stadium strata below street level.
