Is Another Blue Stalwart Heading Out?
Okay, so, Didier Drogba has already left the Bridge, Petr Cech is most probably gone too, and there are already talks going around for the speculated departure of Juan Cuadrado. It’s safe to say that the transfer season is in the full flow!
Amidst this transfer rumble, there are some latest rumors going around the web regarding the Blues midfielder John Obi Mikel. The Guardian is running a report linking the Nigerian midfielder to the Dubai-based club Al Ain, where he would join the fellow Ghanaian forward Asamoah Gyan!
To quote the AfricanFootball.com:
“Mikel’s representatives will meet with Al Ain officials tomorrow to begin negotiations for a possible transfer from the English Premier League for the Nigerian star.
His representatives will begin discussions with Al Ain on Friday in Dubai over a possible transfer.
The player has sanctioned the meeting and may even be part of it. It is now left to be seen what the club will put on the table for him.”
The 28-year-old defensive midfielder has been a loyal servant to this club for nine long years. Once regarded as a world class signing in 2006, the Super Eagles star has been reduced to a bit-part role as of late. Since the second coming of Nemanja Matic, Mikel had to spend most of his time on the bench. It’s obvious the star midfielder would prefer to be on the pitch rather than sit in the dugout among the substitutes!
Still, we find it very hard to see Mikel leave the Bridge this summer. Since Mourinho’s second stint at the club, there have been no indications that either the player himself or even the manager is discontent with each other or looking to part ways. Mikel has looked content with his limited game time on the pitch, and Jose has been more than happy to use him as a late sub to close out the games.
Although, the midfielder might be a one-dimensional player who is far from world-class, there’s no denying that he is actually a quality depth player who can be trusted in the absence of Matic to get the job done.
As we have seen over the years with Jose, not every player is a world beater in his squad. The Portuguese loves a Mikel kind of player who works hard for his limited minutes without making a fuss about the game time!
Now, we don’t know the truth of this report but, stranger things have happened in football and if Mikel does contemplate a move away from Stamford Bridge, we should have nothing but respect for the guy!
A loyal servant who has always been there when his side has needed him the most; let’s see what the future holds for him!
