Chelsea’s stalwart midfielder John Obi Mikel is ready to make a switch to UAE club Al Ain. According to a report by AfricanFootbal.com, the Nigerian midfielder was in Dubai last week to discuss personal terms with the club.
John Obi Mikel has been on the sidelines for Chelsea for quite sometime now. Last season too, Mikel made only 12 appearances in the league, out of which he started in 6 only. It now appears that the 28-year-old, who feels he is still at the prime of his playing days, is finally looking at other options in search of more game time.
Mikel’s agent Babawo Mohammed said to AfricanFootball.com,
“Mikel has agreed personal terms with Al Ain and it is now left for Chelsea and the Dubai club to agree on a transfer fee. He has returned to England to communicate all these to Chelsea. We just have to wait and see what Chelsea say in this regard.”
However, the Dubai-based club is yet to decide a fee, but it seems that it is just a matter of when and not if, before he leaves. Mikel, who has a contract with the Blues till 2016, seems to have grown tired of playing a bit part role, and is looking for a new challenge.
Chelsea signed John Obi Mikel in 2006 under controversial circumstances, after which he went on to win 2 Premier Leagues, 4 FA Cups, 2 League Cups, 1 Champions League and 1 Europa League. However, he has now fallen down the pecking order and with Matic in the squad, a move away from Chelsea seems the right decision for the Nigerian international, while for the club, letting go of a player who isn’t used regularly but draws a weekly salary of 75000 pounds, will be a positive step.
