Most of the Chelsea fans are still skeptical of Kevin De Bruyne’s move away from the Blues last winter.
His performances in Bundesliga, since his move, have some of the fans question the board’s decision of letting him go at such a meager fee. Reason?
The Belgian superstar has been in scintillating form netting 10 goals along with 20 assists in the Bundesliga alone this season. This shows how effective he has been for his new club, VfL Wolfsburg, standing second in the Bundesliga points table ahead of Borussia M. Gladbach. He has been also awarded Man of the Match on 6 occasions.
These stats are even more enormous than what Cesc Fabregas has racked up for the Blues this season! Maybe that’s why some of us did get a bit excited when the news of the winger’s possible return to the Bridge was floated around on the internet.
So, if you are one of the De Bruyne’s supporter and did hope for his return to the Premier League leaders; there’s some bad news for you! When asked about the rumor of his possible return to his old club, this is what the winger had to say of the situation:
“I think, to be honest, that I would not return to Chelsea as long as he [Mourinho] is in charge.
I know that I like the Bundesliga and it always did me good.
But I don’t fear to return to England, or to play in Spain. I believe I can make it there.
You can’t compare my time at Chelsea with what is now.”
True, the 23-year-old has been in a magnificent form for VfL Wolfsburg, but to be fair, for all his goals and assists with the Bundesliga club, I would rather not approve his return to the Bridge anyway. The major reason being, De Bruyne’s continuous issues with tracking back.
If you have watched us play this season under Mourinho, it was quite evident that we used to track back and work as a team. Not just the Willians and Oscars of the side, but, even players like Eden Hazard, who is a superstar, had to contribute defensively whenever the team wanted him too!
Mourinho has been quite clear with his philosophy regarding his team and players. As the Portuguese would say “the team comes before the individual!” If we wanted a luxury player in our side, we wouldn’t have sold someone like Juan Mata anyway. That guy could rack up assists like crazy but, unfortunately, failed to adapt to our system.
Result? He was sold for a hefty profit to make way for other players. Players, who would suit our system.
Same goes with De Bruyne. If you watch him play with Wolfsburg, it’s quite noticeable that the Belgian thrives on space. Rarely would you see him helping his fullback in the defense areas as he is the furthest player of the pitch, ready to launch a counter-attack. No doubt, that guy wouldn’t fit in our system!
Now, no one here is denying his talent and abilities. Scoring so many goals and assists surely showcases his brilliance with the ball. Unfortunately, I don’t see that talent flourishing at Chelsea under Jose!
If we are going for an Attacking Midfielder, players like Reus/Bale/Griezmann makes more sense under our system rather than De Bruyne. Although, I do hope that the Belgian realizes his true potential with some other World Class club, wherever it may be!
P.S. Thibaut Courtois must be grinning at this news somewhere!
