As the 2014-15 Premier League season is nearing the end, the departure of our club legend, Petr Cech looks more and more imminent.
Jose Mourinho has already spoken about the situation and, although, the manager insists that he would like the Czech Republic star to stay at Stamford Bridge beyond this season. I think, by now, everyone knows that this would probably be Petr’s last season in the Blue shirt. Arsenal and Liverpool had already shown some interest in the situation, with Wenger’s hands all over the Blues’ legend. Fittingly, it has been made quite clear by the Chelsea board that our Goalkeeping legend won’t be joining any Premier League rivals (thank god for that!).
The truth is, at the age of 32, Petr Cech is still one of the best goalkeepers in the world and it would be quite unfair for him to sit on the bench as a deputy to Courtois! Allowing him to join one of our major rivals in the Premier League would be an equally stupid idea. Big Pete deserves good game time though, and if it’s not in England, it would be somewhere else. Looking into the situation, the Turkish side, Besiktas, is the latest club to join the race to complete the signature of Cech this summer. According to his agent:
“I have been in contact with Besiktas. Their officials contacted me, and we are in talks. Turkey is a choice for Cech. But we will make a decision once the league season is over.”
Cech’s representative, Viktor Kolar, has now said that he is free to talk with other interested parties over a switch. He said:
“Petr has a valid contract with his current club, however, I can confirm that we have been permitted by Chelsea to negotiate with interested parties and Petr has confirmed his interest to play regularly at a top club.”
Fair enough! As good a servant as Cech has been to Chelsea, it’s time he moves on somewhere else to ensure regular playtime. In Thibaut Courtois, we have one of the best talents in the world to fill the shoes of our legend for the next decade or so! And a move away from Premier League makes perfect sense for both the parties involved. Maybe he can still come back as a backup once he reaches the twilight of his career! One can dream, right? Though, another question that arises with Cech’s imminent departure is; who should Chelsea go after as a backup to Courtois? Should we look at our academy, with the likes of inexperienced and mostly untested Jamal Blackman and Mitchell Beeney at our disposal? That would be like having Ross Turnbull all over again.
Or should we go after someone who is experienced and has no problem in spending most of his time on the bench. Further, he is still good enough to do the job, if called upon, ala Mark Schwarzer? Yes, the second option looks more sensible and maybe that’s why Chelsea are already on the hunt for a backup GK, with John Ruddy and Rob Green as two possible options. Clearly, the club continues to operate in the transfer market like the previous season, acting early to avoid any glitches.
Rob Green has been the first choice shot-stopper for the struggling QPR side, but, with our neighbours already relegated from the Premier League, Green would definitely love the idea of staying in the top-flight, even if it means, as the backup to Courtois. The 35-year-old Englishman has been very impressive for QPR despite the team boasting the worst defensive record in the top flight. According to various tabloids, notably, Dailystar and Metro, Chelsea have already made a bid of 2M pounds to secure the signing of the veteran. The move makes perfect sense for both the parties involved in case Cech does leave in the summer. Green is homegrown, and he will free up a home-grown spot while being a cheap and quality replacement to Cech.
Another option that the Blues are possibly looking at is Norwich City keeper John Ruddy. Notably, Jose Mourinho was keen on signing the 28-year-old as an understudy to Cech last season, but the move didn’t finalize. Norwich City is currently fighting in the Championship to secure a spot in the top flight. According to various sources at Express and Daily Star; should they fail to do so, acquiring the services of John Ruddy shouldn’t be that difficult, granted, he is fine to spend majority of his time on the bench! Besides, his current manager seems to be inspired by Mourinho saying the following of the situation:
“If Chelsea and Jose want John then they can pick up the phone and get the checkbook out. It is part of the game and it doesn’t concern me in the slightest. It doesn’t matter what league you are in there is always going to be interest. That will happen regardless of the situation we are in right now, particularly around good players who have had a good season.”
So, as it stands, both the Goalkeepers would be a good enough option to replace Cech at Stamford Bridge and perform the backup role to perfection. Although, it remains to be seen who the Blues go after in the summer! Who would you rather want at Chelsea?
