In an unlikely turn of events, several media outlets report that newly crowned Premier League Champions Chelsea are plotting a shocking summer transfer move for Liverpool striker Rickie Lambert.
The Mirror claims that the Blues want Lambert to replace the out of contract Didier Drogba and they had even watched the former Southampton player during Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Queens Park Rangers on Saturday.
Chelsea scouts will get an even more closer look at Lambert when Liverpool travel to Stamford Bridge next weekend. Drogba had earlier stated that he wants to keep playing at the highest level for yet another season but it is unclear whether Chelsea will give a one-year contract extension. Drogba, 37, is the third choice behind Diego Costa and Loic Remy and the Blues want Lambert to fill in his boots should the Ivorian leave.
Lambert however decided against a £5m deadline day switch to midlands clubs Aston Villa in the January transfer window. The move came as a surprising one as he would have got more first team football than at Liverpool. However, the 33-year-old is expected to now leave the Anfield side at the end of the season.
Crystal Palace and Hull City are also interested but it could be Chelsea who could sign the player. The move would be a no brainer but on second thoughts it could be a well thought out plan. Lambert would add to the English players quota in the Chelsea squad and the prospect of playing for the Champions could be too big to resist.
