There is an odd rumor doing the rounds on the Metro and Standard UK.
Given that it’s the time of the year when transfer madness is in full flow, We should not be at all surprised, right? But, this rumor has our minds swirling a bit.
According to the Metro, Chelsea have been cleared to complete the 43.5 million pound signing of Antoine Griezmann!
This bit is not at all surprising. Even if this rumor is just Metro trying to shoot in the dark, it is very likely that sooner rather than later, the Frenchman will leave the less spectacular Madrid side to join a bigger European side.
Chelsea are definitely in pole position to acquire the services of the striker/winger who has lit the La Liga on fire with a bucket load of goals this season, but so are Bayern Munich, reportedly. With a buy-out clause of 43.5 million pounds in his contract, it seems like just a matter of time until the man with the crazy hair-do realizes that it’s the right time to move away. Whether it’s Chelsea, Bayern Munich or some other club remains to be seen.
The bit that caught my attention though was Diego Simeone reportedly trying to replace the French star with Tottenham flop Erik Lamela! Okay, calling him a flop is a bit of a stretch, but he is a Spurs player! How else do you want me to describe him! But still, replacing a 30 goals/season player with an Argentine who is struggling to impose himself in the Spurs team is laughable journalism.
Apparently, Standard UK has found some sort of connection between Simeone and Lamela. The Atletico Madrid boss is said to be a big fan of Lamela for the last few years and has allegedly tried to acquire his services on more than one occasions, which he obviously failed to do. Now that Lamela is struggling to get into the Spurs starting 11, Simeone wants to seize this opportunity.
Honestly, I don’t care about it a bit. It’s Simeone’s problem whom he replaces the Frenchman with if he decides to leave. The only part that excites me as a Chelsea fan is the Griezmann to Chelsea bit. God knows we have got so many afros; we need some hairs like that on the pitch!
On a serious note though, Griezmann has been in an amazing form for Atletico. Although, he is mostly deployed as a left winger/striker in Spain, he will probably be shifted to the right wing if he comes to Chelsea next season. His brilliant technique, lightning speed and the knack for goals means that he would eventually settle in at the Bridge. Besides, our front three interchange their positions a lot that should help the Frenchman too and he can also play as a second striker alongside Costa/Remy if we are trailing a goal or two!
Frankly, securing the services of one of Bale/Reus/Griezmann would be amazing from our point of view. Griezmann seems to be the cheapest of the lot, and he will still improve our squad by taking it to the next level.
Now that Koke has said he would prefer to stay at Atletico let’s wait and see if this transfer comes to fruition next season!
