Remember Tomas Kalas? Yes, the young Czech Republic defender who gave a stellar performance in his debut against Liverpool last season, fondly remembered as the day when Stevie G slipped and handed away the Premier League title to Manchester City rather amusingly!
A lot was expected of the young CB/RB after his performance against the Scousers and many expected Kalas to take the Bundesliga by storm when he was sent to loan at Cologne at the start of the season. But alas! Things didn’t quite work out well for the youngster who just managed to make 1 start in the first half of the season. Sigh!
It wasn’t because of injuries or the lack of form, but the Czech start failed to even get a look in at Cologne. After the disappointment in Germany, Chelsea decided it would be good idea to send Kalas to the Championship side; Middlesbrough! And since then, things have been looking good for the defender.
Since January, Kalas has made 17 appearances for the Aitor Karanka side and has excelled in his role as an RB. The 21-year-old Czech Republic international who has been with Middlesbrough for 4 months now, played the final game of his loan spell at Norwich on Friday evening but admitted he would welcome another spell on Teesside if Jose Mourinho chose to send him out on loan.
As per the Czech star:
“I’ve really enjoyed my time here and I really want to come back. If I have that option [next season], I will take it. I’m glad I’ve been able to come to Middlesbrough, and I want to say thank you to the coach, the staff and everyone involved in the club for making me feel at home. Hopefully, we will meet again next season.”
“I’m still a Chelsea player, but at Chelsea it’s always difficult to get into the team. If you don’t see a big chance to play, then it’s better for a young player to get a game somewhere else.”
“I spent the first half of the season in Cologne and that was difficult, but I think I made a good decision to come to Middlesbrough and I think I am on the right way back now. Hopefully, that can continue. If I am to go on loan again next season, hopefully it will be here.”
As Kalas pointed out, it is difficult for a young player to break into the Chelsea side, so it might be best for both the parties involved to send him on loan again, or if the situation demands he can also be a valuable depth in team next season. The future of Kalas with the first team is still unsure with the quality of talent we have. I guess we will just have to wait and see as to what the future holds for young Czech star!
