Chelsea face Khedira dilemma
Chelsea have been linked with a move for Sami Khedira by the Telegraph.
The 27-year-old Real Madrid midfielder will be available as a free agent in the summer transfer window and could attract plenty of suitors, one amongst them being Chelsea’s London rivals Arsenal. The German midfielder had been linked with Arsenal in the last transfer window as well. However, an opportunity for a reunion with his former manager, Jose Mourinho, could well see him wearing the blue shirt next season.
Buying Khedira would mean that the Blues will have to shift to 4-3-3 from the present 4-2-3-1 they deploy. A midfield trio of Nemanja Matic, Cesc Fabregas and Sami Khedira, though looks tempting, could bring about a downfall to the Chelsea setup.
A three man midfield would mean pushing hazard wider up the field. This restricts him from influencing the game in the middle by cutting inside. Hazard loves to have a free role and influence from the middle. His ability to cut inside and combine with the midfield has benefited Chelsea this season. However, in a 4-3-3 set-up, he will be way up the field to influence the midfield much. Another problem which Chelsea will have to deal with will be the choice of their right winger. Oscar has not been in the brightest of forms this season and if shifted wide right, could struggle even more. Chelsea would also lose out on the creative spark which he provides from the center. This would pose a bigger dilemma for Chelsea as they then would have to choose from Willian or Juan Cuadrado to provide an attacking threat.
The inclusion of Khedira could spell the end of either Ramires or Jon Obi Mikel. The midfield duo have been faithful servants of Chelsea. However, they have been rarely used by Jose Mourinho and could very well search for newer challenges.
Another disadvantage of having Khedira would be that Chelsea’s build up play from the centre would become slow. Khedira, although a good passer of the ball, takes his time to measure a pass, and this could make it easy for the opposition to defend in the Premier League.
Despite this, having Khedira in the line-up could provide more flexibility to Jose Mourinho, who, after the departure of Frank Lampard, lacks a box to box midfielder. Khedira would bring an extra dimension to the team. In Matic, Chelsea will have a strong defensive midfielder whereas their creative hub will be Fabregas. Khedira could well provide the link between the two and could well be used as a box to box midfielder. Khedira’s vision and his passing abilities could aid Chelsea in the attack whereas, his positional awareness and his ability to judge the incoming attack could help the Blues in the defensive side of the game.
Chelsea already have a wealth of options available to them in the midfield. Whether they will go for the experienced German or not, remains to be seen. However, this transfer could leave Chelsea with plenty of selection dilemmas.
