During the summer transfer window, Chelsea’s young Czech defender Tomas Kalas was loaned to Bundesliga side FC Koln where his spell was not as impressive.
Later his contract was terminated, and he was sent on loan to Championship side Middlesbrough for the remainder of the season. For Middlesbrough, Kalas featured in 16 games and was impressive in all of them and he also impressed the Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka.
Kalas’s loan spell was very impressive as he played a major role in Middlesbrough’s potential promotion. They are now just 2 points behind the leaders in 4th place, and a huge chunk of credit for this goes to Kalas. His recent impressive performance was against Wolverhampton where he ended the game by crafting an assist to another Chelsea loanee Patrick Bamford. Thomas’s loan spell will end after Middlesbrough’s visit to Norwich on this Friday night, and he will return to Chelsea in the coming week.
Here’s what Aitor Karanka told Teeside Gazette about Kalas’s impressive loan spell:
“We needed another right-back – we had Ryan Fredericks but, to have two players in each position, we needed another player. Tomas arrived, and he did very, very well. The main thing is that he wanted to play. Chelsea wanted Kalas to play games, and he played, and, I wanted Kalas to play, and he played. So Chelsea and we are very pleased with his attitude and his performances since he’s been here with us and Tomas is pleased to have played for us.”
Addition of another promising young centre-back to Chelsea’s dugout has not just raised the bar of the squad quality, but also the competition inside the squad. Kalas’s addition will surely affect the position of Zouma and Cahill in the future. Whom to start and whom to rotate will be a tough call if Kalas and the other youngsters maintain this level of performance.
