It’s no secret that Chelsea star Eden Hazard idolises French Midfielder and football legend, Zinedine Zidan. In fact, our midfield magician used to emulate him while growing up!
Well, if watching Zidane makes you one of the best player in the world maybe we should make our academy players watch the clips of Zizou non-stop! Joking aside, the Belgian surely has a lot of respect for the retired legend. Recently, he was asked about the comparisons to his idol and here’s what he had to say:
“It’s a really nice thing to hear because everyone knows Zidane was my role model; we play a different style, but if I can compare to him then it is a great honour for me.”
“I watched him so much when I was younger, almost every game I could. He is my favourite player, for sure.”
As I said, the Belgian has a lot of respect for the man who has been his idol since his days in French League. That’s all fun and good but what if, the man he respects is actually the assistant manager of the biggest club on the planet? And what if, that man also admires him in the same way?
Zinedine Zidane was apparently speaking to media after the Match Against Poverty (which was quite fun btw, Brazilian Ronaldo scored a hat-trick!) on Monday. When inquired about Hazard’s “log phase” rise to stardom, here’s what he said:
“Obviously Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are very spectacular, but I like Eden Hazard. Everything he does on the field, I like it. I like his behavior, his decisive side and the fact that he makes progress every year. He still has a good margin of progression, and he’s the biggest reason Chelsea are leading the championship.”
Obviously, the saner side of me screams not to be so paranoid over just an interview. Eden Hazard has just signed a deal and he is tied with us for the next 5 years at least, but that won’t stop the transfer rumor from going wild, will it?
Last year it was PSG, this year, and quite possibly until the time he remains a Chelsea player, the rumor mill is gonna link him with Zidane and Madrid. Idols, mutual respect, the successor to Ronaldo etc. and it all just start making sense as a journalist. Right?
But, as a Chelsea fan, I sure do hope that we don’t get to see that day. With all due respect to our legends, Hazard is definitely the most talented player to put on the Chelsea shirt and I would much prefer to see him touching the zenith at Stamford Bridge over a 100 Million Pounds of cheque any day! Wouldn’t you?
