Chelsea Player Ratings vs PSG: The Blues play out a disappointing and sluggish draw to bow out of the UCL
It was painful to watch Chelsea play in a non-interested manner and lose the game to a determined PSG who took revenge for last season’s defeat at the hands of Chelsea with their heroic 2-2 draw.
David Luiz was at the heart of all things inspirational to pull PSG out of the jaws of defeat, in typical fashion in a fixture where 4 out of the 6 goals were scored by defenders.
Here are the player ratings:
Thibaut Courtois: 9/10
He had a great game and produced a magnificent save off Thiago Silva’s bullet header among other saves. He faced two unstoppable headers from David Luiz and Thiago Silva (immediately after the save) which proved to be costly for slumbering Chelsea.
Branislav Ivanovic: 5/10
Had nothing much to do in the game where Chelsea lacked intensity. He was there, in the tussles with PSG players and also in the attack where he tried contributing with crosses, but nothing spectacular.
Gary Cahill: 6/10
He had a splendid moment in the match with a powerful finish which got him a goal, and Chelsea’s opener late in the game. He had an average game otherwise.
John Terry: 5/10
He had an average game and was at the heart of the defense that was responsible for conceding two set pieces. It was not something expected of Chelsea.
Cesar Azpilicueta: 5.5/10
He looked energetic and wanted to things, but when the pace of the game was so slow and off-beat, he found the going tough despite all his enthusiasm, which was not in the same wavelength as the rest of the team.
Cesc Fabregas: 5.5/10
A night where he could have been a bit better with his passing, or more decisive, Fabregas found himself doing the defensive bit of the job than the offensive part. Most of his passing was done to hold control over the midfield, but the team was struggling to get out of complacency.
Nemanja Matic: 7/10
He had a good game as he steadied the ship for Chelsea. He helped out the defenders whenever there was the need, and he was good match for Matuidi and Verratti in the center. He was replaced late on, as he had a slight knock during the game.
He had a controversial moment when he overacted to a foul by Zlatan Ibrahimovic that cost the big Swede a straight red card. He had a pretty average game otherwise, and was aggressive and fiery as well.
Was average in the first half, and outright poor in the second. There was nothing he could do when he was being pressed and though he did well occasionally to get into some good positions, he could barely settle into the game or provide the dynamism.
He looked like the only one who could get Chelsea a win or a goal. He was there doing his bit of dribbling and linking up, but the team around him was struggling to match his tempo. He was very calm under immense pressure to score a penalty.
Diego Costa: 6/10
Roughed up, fouled and really fought hard with Luiz and Silva throughout the game but couldn’t get a clear shot on target and also missed a clear chance of playing Fabregas through on goal. His passing was decent and he was denied a clear penalty. He was lucky to escape a red card on a push on Marquinhos and also a foul on Silva.
He came on for Oscar, and was thought off as a move to protect the other Brazilian from getting a second yellow. Willian tried, but couldn’t provide the energy he usually does, as he and Ramires joined hands in becoming the pent up engines of Chelsea’s midfield.
Kurt Zouma: 6/10
Had decent time on the pitch when he replaced Matic. He didn’t do anything spectacular though he forced a handball out of Silva purely because of his leap!
Didier Drogba: 6/10
Didn’t play enough to judge him microscopically. For whatever time he was on the pitch, he was pretty decent as he tried to give Chelsea the target man they would want, but could not contribute much in a sluggish team.
