It’s March; and already the transfer mill is in full swing! Some best midfielders of Europe viz. Paul Pogba, Ross Barkley, Koke and Bastian Schweinsteiger have been linked with Chelsea. However, one seemingly underrated and an almost done deal is Douglas Costa.
The Brazilian is currently trading his ply at the Ukrainian top flight club FC Shakhtar Donetsk. The midfielder was heavily linked with Chelsea in the January transfer window as well; however, Jose had to make a choice between him and Juan Cuadrado. Eventually, the Colombian replaced the departed Andre Schurrle in the already star-studded Chelsea squad. So without much delay let’s know more about this talented midfielder.
The major strength Douglas Costa possesses is his versatility. The Brazilian dawns may feathers to his hat and occupy various roles such as a midfielder, an attacking midfielder and can also occupy both the flanks. An attacking midfielder’s role in the side is to create chances, assist goals and score some as well. Douglas Costa is able to do all three having scored twice and created 10 chances in Europe’s elite competition last season.
His explosive style of play in the final third also saw him assist and score a goal for Shakhtar in the Champions League. Douglas Costa has also scored twice and assisted four times in the Ukrainian Premier League. Another great asset that Costa brings to the table is his exquisite dribbling skills. The midfielder dribbles past the defenders ridiculously and assists.
His only clear weakness, based on his statistics, is probably his defensive work rate off the ball. In those six Champions League games, he made just three interceptions which would suggest that he doesn’t tend to offer much behind the ball.
According to various sources, Costa is desperate for a move away from the Ukrainian club due to problems in the internal affairs of the country. Also, Douglas Costa quoted to fourfourtwo.com about his move to Chelsea as:
“I’d be really interested in moving to Chelsea — not only because of everything Willian tells me about the club, but because I think that I’d be able to achieve everything I want having someone like Jose Mourinho by my side,”
“Since I left Brazil, I have worked with a marvelous coach [Mircea Lucescu] and got an idea of how much influence such a good professional can have in your football. Now I think it’s time to try a new philosophy and I’m sure that Mourinho’s is the best around. He’s always fighting for trophies.
“Besides that, I’d have the chance to play in the Premier League, the best league in the world. What really impresses me is that you never know which team will win — that’s a factor that always keeps athletes motivated.” – fourfourtwo.com
With Oscar not performing as expected, Douglas Costa seems to be the answer to the midfield woes. Mourinho, himself is an admirer of the midfielder. Also, Costa is available at a very judicious fee of around 20 to 25 million dollars, it’s surely a steal.
