Cesc Fabregas: Chelsea’s New Record Breaker
Diego Costa’s second goal in the 5-0 win over Swansea, meant something special for Chelsea’s assist Maestro, Cesc Fabregas. The Spaniard not only made his 15th assist of the season, but also became the only player in the Premier League history to do so in the least number of games.
He is now the fastest player to reach 15 assists in a single Premier League season in just 21 games, 5 games less than anyone else. Second placed Robert Pires achieved that mark in 2001-02 season in 26 games, ahead of third placed Frank Lampard, who did it in 28 games in 2004-05 season.
Other names in the top 8 are Thierry Henry, David Beckham, Eric Cantona, Nolberto Solano and David Silva. Cesc Fabregas, who is way ahead of these great players in the list, goes to show the quality with which the 27-year-old has played this season and also that of the team he is playing for.
With 15 games still left to be played this season, Fabregas is all set to break the Premier League’s all-time record for the most number of assists made by a player in one season. The record was set by his former Arsenal teammate Thierry Henry in 2002-03 season.
One thing that many people may not know is that Cesc is also the only player to have made 15 assists in two different Premier League seasons. He did it before in his Arsenal days in the 2007-08 season.
The Spaniard left North London club for his native country Spain to play for Barcelona in the summer of 2011. He made his return to English football three years later in 2014, but this time to the Western part of London. The decision to join Chelsea earlier this season has done him all the good in the world, as the midfielder is now playing ‘the best football of his career’.
If any other player had given this statement, it wouldn’t have been much of a surprise. But this is Cesc Fabregas, the star of a handsome-looking Arsenal side at one point of time who went on to play in the Champions League final. And also a player who spent three years at Barcelona with Lionel Messi and co. Him saying this after not even spending half a year at Chelsea goes to show what kind of new opportunities and platform the club has given the player.
In a league where no other player has managed to make more than 8 assists, Fabregas has notched up 15. He tops the most assist chart for the season, although he claims that the league has become harder than before.
“The Premier League has definitely improved since I left three years ago. The passion is still the same – from the fans, the players. Physically, it has always been a really hard league because it is so competitive, but tactically it’s now much better. I think to break down defenses these days is more difficult than before”, the Spain international said.
