The first thing that comes to mind with The Special One is silverware and what is bigger than the league title itself. With intentions of title glory in mind, the club decided to recall the much popular figure among fans last year. Unfortunately for everyone, the Blues failed to live up to the expectations. But with some fearsome additions to the squad this year, Mourinho clearly encouraged the waves that the boys from the Bridge are ready on all fronts.
In football, there is trend of reckoning the situations from the past. For instance, Mourinho has never lost the league title if his sides are top of the league at the turn of the year. And Chelsea this year were on the top of table at the new year eve with 3 points advantage over the closest title rival Manchester City.
One can say that it is only coincidence. Perhaps, if it is 2 or 3 times. But surely 7 times is not at all coincidence. On all the past 7 occasions, Mourinho’s side had gone to lift the ultimate league title after being on the top at the turn of the year. Let us have a look:
2002-2003: At the turn of the year Porto were well and truly leading the league with a total of 39 points and 9 points cushion over SL Benfica and to no surprise went on to lift the title.
2003-2004: After being on top again at the new year eve with 39 points again and 5 points lead over Sporting CP, Mourinho successfully retained the title.
2004-2005: The Blues celebrated the new year at the top of the premier league with 46 points and 5 points lead over the London rivals Arsenal. The mood was pretty much same as the Blue boys went on to lift their title in almost half a century.
2005-2006: Mourinho believed in perfection and perfection indeed from the start. The reigning champions started the campaign even stronger in comparison to the previous year as the Blues maintained 11 points lead over Manchester United at the start of the year 2005. With no need to recall the Pensioners went on lift the famous trophy again making it two in two on the trot for the first time in history.
2008-2010: Mourinho added his effect in Seria A too and guided Internazionale to back to back titles with the Italians leading the summit over Juventus (3 points lead) and Milan (5 points lead) at the turn of the year on both the occasions respectively.
2010-2013: It was time for Spain to welcome Mourinho and being pretty much right he played a key part in ending the dominance of FC Barcelona in the league. On the very first day of 2012, Los Blancos side were ruling the league with 49 points and 5 points cushion over the Catalans. And to no surprise he brought the title to the Bernabeu in style.
Now Jose Mourinho, the mastermind himself helped the Blues to maintain the 3 points lead over Manchester City which was later demolished courtesy of surprise defeat at White Hart Lane. But can he and Chelsea live up to the expectations this season after reaching the touching distance of the milestone last year? Well considering the confidence of the club and remaining away fixtures left, the SW6 side has got everything needed to land first premier league title in five years.
Have your say my fellow Blues, will Mourinho be able to continue his trend and Chelsea legacy?
