Diego Costa scored his 15th Premier League goal on Saturday as Chelsea beat Newcastle United 2-0 at Stamford Bridge. While he moved clear of Sergio Aguero at the top of the scorers’ chart, Costa also made a new club record. Diego Costa became the first Chelsea player to have a tally of 15 league goals on match day 21.
Diego Costa has raked up 15 goals by match day 21, beating the previous numbers of Didier Drogba, Nicholas Anelka and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. Earlier, Didier Drogba, Nicholas Anelka and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink had scored 14 goals each in the 2009-10, 2008-09 and 2001-02 seasons respectively.
Scoring goals is nothing new for Diego Costa. Last season Costa had scored 27 league goals in 35 appearances for Atletico Madrid, winning the La Liga title ahead of Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid. This season, Diego Costa has settled in the Premier League like a duck on water. Even without full fitness, Diego Costa managed 7 goals in his first four Premier League games.
His niggling hamstring injuries could not stop him from scoring as he scored his 10th goal against Liverpool at Anfield. After a few matches, Costa missed a few games with injuries, while he missed the match against Tottenham Hotspur serving suspension, due to the accumulation of 5 yellow cards. On his return, he continued his impressive scoring run, with goals against Hull City, West Ham United and Spurs.
His 15th league goal on match day 21 seems even more impressive, when we consider that he scored them from only 18 appearances. His tenacity, aggression, may seem overboard at times but what has never been in doubt, is his finishing prowess and his ability to hit the back of the net. Having surpassed Sergio Aguero at the top, it seems Diego Costa is all set to win the Premier League Golden Boot this year, along with inevitable trophies for Chelsea.
