Chelsea in talks with Fiorentina over Juan Cuadrado as Mourinho looks to offload Salah and Schurrle
According to sources at Sky Sports, Chelsea Football Club are engaged in talks with Serie A club Fiorentina over a possible transfer for Colombian winger Juan Cuadrado, as Jose Mourinho has made signing a right winger his priority.
The winger had impressed in the FIFA World Cup while representing Colombia, and had the highest number of assists alongside the World Cup’s highest assist maker Tony Kroos. At Chelsea, both Andre Schurrle and Mohamed Salah, have struggled to hold down a regular place on the right wing. Neither of them have been able to provide any sort of competition to Willian.
Cuadrado’s arrival at Stamford Bridge is dependent on whether Chelsea are able to offload Schurrle and Salah. AS Roma have been the latest Italian club to show interest in Mohamed Salah, trying to sign him on loan, with an option to buy him at the end of the season for around 12 million pounds. Wolfsburg have shown widespread interest in Schurrle, offering upto 23 million pounds, but Schurrle seems more interested in a switch to Dortmund, who have expressed a similar interest, but only in a summer move instead of a January transfer.
As Jose Mourinho awaits improved offers for Salah and Schurrle from Roma and Wolfsburg respectively, reports suggest Cuadrado’s agent Alessandro Lucci will be flying in to London to hold talks with Chelsea and broker a deal, after a 20.6 million pound bid was reportedly rejected by Fiorentina on Wednesday. Cuadrado has a 26.8 million pound release clause in his contract at Fiorentina.
Juan Cuadrado is predominantly a winger, who plays on the right of a front three. While Reus was considered for the role, signing him in January seems unlikely, with Real Madrid looking to sign him in the summer, and so, Cuadrado seems like a more realistic option at this point of time.
According to Game Has Just Begun, signing a winger like Juan Cuadrado, who is known for his raw pace and accurate crossing, will increase another dimension to an already fantastic attacking contingent. While Willian has worked his socks off for the team, and has helped out Ivanovic by tracking back almost all season, goals have come mostly from the left and centre, courtesy of Hazard and Fabregas. So signing a the winger who would contribute with his assists, after selling Salah and Schurrle, who are spending most of the time on the bench, seems very plausible.
