It’s time for some Capital One Cup action as the Blues travel to the Pride Park Stadium to square up against the impressive Championship side Derby County in the fourth round of the competition.
Derby County has been in a brilliant form so far this season, sitting at third position in the Championship table, just one point behind the leaders. Chelsea fans remember the Steve McClaren’s side as the team who narrowly missed out to advance into the PL last season after second half heroics of Chelsea loanee Patrick Bamford.
As far as Chelsea is concerned, Capital One Cup is probably the lowest trophy in Mourinho’s wishlist, or so did we thought? Here’s an excerpt from what Fabregas had to say on the boss:
“He wants to win every competition that he is up for. He has already told us he wants to win this trophy. It is the first trophy of the season and he wants it.
He will put out the best team possible to win the game, I am sure of that.”
Well, now, as it has been established that Jose Mourinho is more than willing to go for the Quadruple, let’s look at the key player battles that may influence the outcome of this fixture as we travel to Derbyshire:
CHRIS MARTIN vs KURT ZOUMA
For those who are the fans of “Coldplay”, no am not talking about the lead singer of the band. For those who are Cricket fans, no am not talking about the New Zealand’s fast Bowler either! Chris Martin is a Scottish Footballer, who plays as a striker for the Championship side Derby County, and is damn good at what he does.
Already amassing 14 goals (!) in all competitions so far this season with a couple of assists, the 26-year-old has earned the call to Scotland national team. The English-born Scottish, however, haven’t really come up against the quality of someone like Kurt Zouma in the Championship and it would be quite interesting to see how the Striker performs against us.
Kurt Zouma, whenever he has got the opportunity, has impressed the manager and fans alike. The 20-year-old has been in great form as a cover for Cahill and Terry and this would be another chance for the Frenchman to prove his worth when he comes up against Chris Martin. Could be an interesting battle, look out for this one folks!
WILL HUGHES vs NEMANJA MATIC
The 19-year-old Will Hughes is already been regarded as one of the most promising young English Talent. The young midfielder has been so impressive for the Steve’s side that teams like Arsenal, Liverpool and even Chelsea have been sniffing around him for past few months. Here’s some quote from Steve McClaren himself to go by the hype surrounding the teenager:
“He is a modern-type of player. You can give him the ball in any situation and you know he is going to keep it. That is so vital at top-level football.
He can always keep the ball and deal with it but that killer pass to unlock packed defences or scoring a goal, that is what he has added to his game.”
Quite impressive for a 19-year-old who is already been compared to the likes of Xavi and Iniesta. The midfielder plays a similar role to what Fabregas plays for Chelsea, but his first real test would be coming up against the best Defensive Midfielder in the world, Nemanja Matic.
Matic has been incredible for the Blues this season. Anything that I say to praise the Serbian would be an understatement. Will Hughes, for all his talent and promises, will find it incredibly hard to get the better of Matic. Still, it could be one of the best battle of the night that we must keep an eye on!
CRAIG FORSYTH vs ANDRE SCHURRLE
Craig Forsyth has started nearly all the games for Derby County this season. Deployed as a Left-Back, Forsyth has been a very important cog in the wheel for the Steve’s side defensively and also going forward from the wings, where the fullback has already collected 5 assists so far this season.
Known for his attacking runs to provide width on the wings, Forsyth will have a tough task of handling a pacy Andre Schurrle tomorrow night.
This season hasn’t exactly gone the way Schurrle would have probably hoped for after his World Cup heroics. The mysterious illness and unfortunate injuries have mostly kept the German out of the starting line-up but after the good performance against Sporting Lisbon, the winger is getting back to his best.
If Schurrle hopes to regain his full form and get back to the starting eleven, this would be his best chance to destroy Craig Forsyth in the wings and make a statement in front of fans and the manager. Promises to be an intense battle, look out for it!
