A walk in the park for the Blues as they defeated Sporting Lisbon 3-1 with ease.
A night for the regulars to rest and the bench to shine as Salah, Zouma, Schurrle and Mikel started the game with their agenda to impress Jose Mourinho. After the defeat at Newcastle, Chelsea were sharp and desperate to get the winning momentum back.
Here are how the players performed:
Petr Cech 6
There wasn’t much Petr Cech could do about Sporting’s opening goal. Silva was unmarked and thrashed one in the bottom left corner. Cech did pull off a smart save to keep Islam Slimani’s back-post header out with the Blues leading the game with 2 goals.
Cesar Azpilicueta 7
Chelsea’s regular left back had a chance to play at his natural position. The Spaniard performed brilliantly on the right for a change, getting in those crucial crosses and winning most of the one on one challenges. A solid performance altogether.
Kurt Zouma 6
A completely changed defender since his debut for the Blues; Zouma stood strong in the middle of their back four, clearing those crucial headers and spoiling Sporting’s attack plan.
Garry Cahill 6
The English international had the responsibility to take charge of the defense with Zouma and seemed calm and composed. Throwing his body at most of the Sporting shots the Cahill performed brilliantly.
Filipe Luis 7
With Cesar Azpilicueta on the right, Luis had to prove to the manager what Chelsea is missing out on a natural Left Back. The Brazilian won the penalty which set Chelsea on their way early on in the game and looked powerful going forward.
John Mikel Obi 7
The Nigerian performed well by holding onto possession in awkward situations; scoring a goal in the 56th minute and looked a better player than the last time. He protected the back four well and performed his required duties.
Nemanja Matic 7.5
Perhaps the most influential Chelsea player this season; Matic showed what the Blues missed out on in their previous game. He earned the assist to Schurrle’s goal and almost scored a peach. The Serbian made good use of the freedom he had going forward.
Andre Schurrle 8.5
The German was quick and imposing throughout the night. With a stunning goal to his name, Schurrle certainly stated his case with his personal performance; Desperate to get back in the first team squad.
Cesc Fabregas 8
A smart penalty kick which resulted in a goal and sent a great ball in to Mikel for a tap in. Playing behind Diego Costa he was not in his usual deeper central midfield role, but played just as well.
Mohamed Salah 6
A well-deserved start for the Egyptian; who dismantled his marker with sheer pace. Energetic on the left throughout his game since much of Chelsea’s play came from that side.
Diego Costa 6.5
After a not so impressive first half, the Spaniard was back to bullying defenders in the second half. A menace for the Sporting defense; winning crucial headers and helping out the defensive department as well.
The Blues were dominant throughout the game. They had to get their winning momentum back and this was a great night to start. Academy Starlet Ruben Loftus-Cheek looked confident and took responsibility on the pitch. The Blues now face Hull City and will be hoping to reignite their winning streak once again.
