Player Performance for Chelsea vs Newcastle United
Chelsea’s unbeaten run in the start of the season was halted in dramatic fashion by dedicated hosts at St. James’s Park, as Newcastle got another one against Chelsea and Mourinho.
Though Newcastle got extremely lucky in attack, Chelsea’s sloppiness and their resilience resulted in the first loss for the Blues this season.
Here are the ratings for Chelsea players:
Thibaut Courtois: Rating – 6.5/10
There was nothing he could have done as Newcastle poacher Cisse scored from very close range. Chelsea’s defence let them down in the first goal and their sloppiness in midfield caused the second.
Branislav Ivanovic: Rating – 5.5/10
His lack of speed, decisiveness and crossing abilities were severely exposed as he couldn’t do much with his rather good attacking runs. He was severely tested in defence as Sammy Ameobi took him on with directness.
Gary Cahill: Rating – 5.5/10
It was really a poor performance from the otherwise extremely reliable Cahill. His disastrous blunder in the defense and Ivanovic’s mistake directly resulted in the first goal.
John Terry: Rating – 6.5/10
While he didn’t make defensive errors, he did lose possession at times where he should have cleared the ball. He was Chelsea’s most solid defender but the back four didn’t looked organised.
Cesar Azpilicueta: Rating – 6/10
While we never question his defensive ability, we know that he’s not quite the traditional left back while going forward. That showed as he couldn’t offer crosses which Filipe Luis did when he came on.
John Obi Mikel: Rating – 6/10
We always knew, we’d miss Matic. Mikel isn’t bad as he does everything that he can but the flair and intelligence that Matic brings in defensive midfield was missed, as Cisse made unchecked runs into the box, not once but twice.
Cesc Fabregas: Rating – 7/10
Was denied any space at all but kept his composure throughout the match. Everything went through him as he looked to create chances but it just wasn’t Chelsea’s day. He still got an assist.
Oscar: Rating – 6/10
Oscar had a decent game but he was getting less influential as the game wore on. He was substituted for Schürrle when Chelsea conceded.
Willian: Rating – 7/10
He was a threat in the first half as he managed to make runs behind the defence in great crossing positions, which is commendable considering Newcastle’s extremely low block defence.
Eden Hazard: Rating – 7/10
He was a threat as he took on Janmaat, but the support from Costa or the combination play that he thrives on was missing. His influence was reducing in the game as he obviously tired on and was unlucky as he hit the post once.
Diego Costa: Rating – 5/10
Mourinho wouldn’t want to see a similar performance from him again. He wasn’t into the game as he lost possession time and again; and showed no great movement in closed spaces.
André Schürrle: Rating – 7/10
Was very lively and a fighter on the pitch. He would want to send a message across to Mourinho about being more regular in the team.
Filipe Luis: Rating – 8/10
As a sub, his attacking impact in the last 15 minutes was extremely lively considering Azpilicueta’s lack of offensive involvement. Luis can seriously be a great offensive threat against closed and low block defenses as he showed that he’s Chelsea’s best and first real crosser.
Didier Drogba: Rating – 8/10
Immediate impact as he started winning most of his headers and scored a well-taken goal. He is in good form and Mourinho knows he can use the big man in times of need.
