The Blues in the last 20 years have always had a great level of goalkeepers.
The current crop includes Thibaut Courtois, Petr Cech and Mark Schwarzer. Jose Mourinho has at his disposal two of the world’s best goalkeepers in Petr Cech and Thibaut Courtois; a rare sight in any top club.
Today we talk about a keeper who has spent 9 seasons; Twice a Premier League winner, 141 appearance for Chelsea Football Club, Chelsea’s player of the year 2001-02 and the best goalkeeper in the Premier League for the year 2002-03 – Carlo Cudicini
Cudicini’s Chelsea Years
If there’s any one who knows what Petr Cech is going through right now, it’s Carlo Cudicini. Castel di Sangro loaned the Italian keeper to Chelsea in the year 1999 and the Blues signed him in 2000. Suffering an injury after 4 good seasons; the Blues signed Czech international Petr Cech in 2004; who out performed Cudicini and earned the number 1 spot. In 2007-08 Cudicini stayed on again as a deputy to Cech, but consecutive injuries to the Czech star saw Cudicini feature 19 times in all competitions. In 2009 the Italian lost all hopes to regain his number 1 tag and signed for rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
Legend Carlo Cudicini Backs Chelsea Goalkeepers
The 41-year-old has hung his gloves for good and wants to coach outfield players instead of goalkeepers. The Italian shot-stopper was one of the special guests at the Annual Lunch answering questions asked by supporters. The former Blue believes Mourinho has that killer instinct and the ambition to win the league this year; He sees the winning formula in the current squad. As far as the goalkeeper situation goes the Italian said –
“There can only be one goalkeeper on the pitch and it’s a hard job for the manager to rotate a little bit because it’s not normally a position where rotation comes into it. But it’s very, very good for the club. There might be two goalkeepers out of the three who are not happy to be out of the team, but for the club it’s a massive thing.”
Cudicini played in a different era altogether. Today’s goalkeepers have to don the role of a sweeper, out perform day in and out and throw their body at the ball at any cost; A competitive position. Petr Cech is going through the same phase as the Italian Carlo Cudicini went through at Chelsea; With the January transfer window right around the corner, it will be interesting to see as to whether Petr Cech would stay and fight for the number 1 position or move on to a club where he’s given the number 1 tag.
