With the international break upon us, it gives us time to reflect and re-evaluate how this Chelsea machine can keep going. Does this squad need refreshments? It may not seem so now.
With everything going Chelsea’s way, all may seem rosy, but the fact remains that there are holes in the squad and there is not enough depth to be able to withstand a long season. If that is not the case, then it will be so when some players leave in January. So here we look at the most Possible January Transfers and Signings for Chelsea :
We are fairly well stocked with 2 world class goalkeepers and a more than able 3rd choice keeper in Mark Schwarzer. However with the recent comments made by both our top 2 keepers it seems likely that Petr Cech might be wanting out. It is imperative that should he decide to leave we should be able to replace him. He will be needed to be replaced by a keeper that is young and has potential as well as the will to be a deputy to Courtois.
There were rumors in earlier seasons linking Chelsea to players like Alphonse Areola, Asmir Begovic and Jack Butland. However, in such a situation it would be wise to get some English talent in the squad because of the home grown players quota and in that case Jack Butland ticks all the boxes for being English, interested, cheap on wages, young, talented as well as willing to be a deputy.
This Chelsea squad has a lot of players that can play in different positions; however the squad is a little light to cope with the rigours of competing in 4 competitions.
We have 3 full backs in the squad as well as 4 centre backs (with Ivanovic covering both parts of the defense). In Zouma, we have a player with immense potential but he is rather untested. Granted, Mourinho has indeed trusted another youngster like Varane before but would you be comfortable in Champions League quarter-final away leg with Zouma starting the game? It is difficult and would be a shame for an end to the season that has been so good till this point.
As many as 2 defenders being injured out of 6 and we would be down to fielding an even more inexperienced Nathan Ake. A player that has been linked with Chelsea recently is the aforementioned Varane, who has a great relationship with Mourinho and has great potential. However, it is unlikely Real Madrid would let go of one of their prized assets.
Some other potential names that need to be considered are Fabian Schar (Basel), Aymeric Laporte (Athletic Bilbao) and Kyriakos Papadopoulos (Schalke).
This is an area where Chelsea is well stocked with a wealth of options in midfield as well as in the final third. Players like Fabregas, Ramires, and Oscar can play in multiple positions across midfield.
Matic and Fabregas have made the central midfield positions their own with Ramires and Oscar who can fill in. In the final third we have multiple options with the likes of Willian, Salah, Schurrle and Hazard.
The only hole that might need filling is if Mikel leaves for pastures new. In that situation, we would need some backup with names like Sami Khedira being an option since he is in last year of the contract at Real Madrid. He would be interested in a reunion with his former manager.
Another option can be recalling Marco Van Ginkel back from loan which would be an able backup option.
On the strikers front, we are fairly well stocked with Costa being the undisputed number 1 and Remy and Drogba playing the able deputies. The profile of the strike force can deal with multiple tactics and should be good enough to last the season. Although there are news popping up as we are linked to a Brazilian Striker.
