The 21 years old French international is a hot property amongst the European giants since past 2-3 years. Raphael is a perfect defender who can play either as a front foot center back or back foot center back. He has numerous defensive abilities. He is famous for his timely tackles and interceptions. As he stands 1.91 m (6 ft 3 in) tall, he is a good header of the ball and rarely loses an aerial duel.

His excellent passing skills and vision add more tempo and directness in the play; he also has the ability to start an attack from the back line. He frequently plays long balls in order to stretch the opposition’s defense to make way for his attackers. He is a magnificent tackler, and 77% of his tackles were successful till date. The only noticeable negativity in Varane is his concentration, but for a player of his age, it is understandable, and it can be improved.

The Spanish newspaper Marca had nicknamed Varane as Mr. Clean because of his flawless defending and passing. Varane will adjust in Chelsea’s back four within no time, as he has all the defensive abilities, and he is a Mourinho approved player. It will be exciting to watch the partnership of Raphaël Varane and Gary Cahill in the center of the defense line.

Currently, Chelsea’s center backs are Gary Cahill, Kurt Zouma and John Terry. 19 years old Zouma is a developing defender who isn’t yet mature enough to play big games, whereas, John Terry’s career is reaching its edge and he won’t be fit enough to play week in week out. Raphaël Varane is seen as a direct replacement for the Chelsea skipper.

All that Raphael wants is a regular starting spot in the team which he will surely get with the Blues. As Varane has recently penned a new 6 years deal with the Los Blancos, it will be extremely difficult for Chelsea to sign him.
