Atletico Madrid and Spain midfielder Koke linked with a move to Chelsea, with Jose Mourinho seemingly interested in bringing the 22-year-old to Stamford Bridge.
According to the English Daily Express, both Chelsea and Manchester City are ready to trigger the 48 million pound release clause in Koke’s contract.
La Liga giants Barcelona have already had multiple bids for Koke rejected by Atletico Madrid, due to their unwillingness to sell such an important and talented player to a direct domestic rival. Chelsea already have three players from Atletico’s La Liga winning contingent, and Koke is said to be close to one of those current Chelsea stars, Diego Costa.
Sergio Ramos recently accused Costa of not being as fully committed to his national team as much as he is to the Chelsea cause, due to Costa’s pulling out of the Spain squad during the international break. Koke, on the other hand, in an interview to Radio Marca, said that the absence of Costa is the decision of the Spanish national team’s medical staff. Koke also further expressed his confidence in Diego Costa’s commitment to the national team and emphasized on how much he hopes to play with Costa again in the future.
Koke was magnificent for Atletico Madrid last season, winning the La Liga title, their first since 1996, and reaching the UEFA Champions League Final, along with current Chelsea players Filipe Luis, Diego Costa and Thibaut Courtois. Koke can play as an attacking midfielder like Oscar, can also play out wide and can even play in the middle of the park alongside Matic or Fabregas. He is good at creating chances and distributing the ball. Thus Koke, if bought eventually, will be a welcome addition to the already superb Chelsea squad.
