Jose Mourinho, for the first time in his second stint so far, has practically been this giddy, after his side’s impressive showing in the Champions League encounter against Schalke.
To be fair to the manager, the Blues’ are playing one of the best football we have seen in the recent times. The last couple of games against West Brom and Schalke has marked the evolution of this Chelsea team compared to last year when our ” little horses” were unable to break down a deep 19th-century defense.
Things are expected to be similar when we visit the Stadium of Light tomorrow to line-up against Gus Poyet’s Sunderland. The Black Cats will probably look to sit back and absorb the pressure while the Blues have a go at their defense. With a fully fit squad (except Nathan Ake) available at the Boss’ disposal, here’s how Mourinho might line-up against Sunderland tomorrow:
GK – THIBAUT COURTOIS
With 2 clean sheets in the last couple of games, the Belgian seems to have settled in comfortably in the Blues camp. Not that we ever doubted his abilities, but these clean sheets will sure boost his confidence going forward. He is expected to start over Cech tomorrow.
CB – GARY CAHILL and JOHN TERRY
Both of our first choice CB’s haven’t put a foot wrong in the last few games and there’s no reason they won’t start tomorrow. Mourinho might be tempted to give Kurt Zouma a chance, given the aerial threat from Steven Fletcher, but there’s a good chance he would like to roll on with the preferred and experienced duo.
LB – CESAR AZPILICUETA
Azpilicueta is having a brilliant season at the LB spot. I can’t remember him having a bad game this season. Given Mourinho’s preference of Azpilicueta in the league games, the Spaniard will most likely keep his spot ahead of Luis.
RB – BRANISLAV IVANOVIC
Do we even have to guess? The Serbian surely starts!
CM – NEMANJA MATIC and CESC FABREGAS
Arguably the best damn CM pairing in Europe. The duo is the main reason for Chelsea’s invincibility in all competitions across Europe. Tomorrow they will have the job of unlocking a deep defense.
LW – EDEN HAZARD
Santiago Vergini is the next fullback in line, expected to be destroyed in Eden Hazard’s quest of greatness tomorrow.
RW – WILLIAN
After a brilliant showing against Schalke, the Brazilian is expected to keep his spot ahead of Schurrle and Salah on the Right Wing.
CAM – OSCAR
Fabregas, in his recent interview, underlined the importance of Oscar to the team and their interchanging play that confuses the opposition and allows one of them to move forward while other sits back with Matic in the pivot. Truth is, the Brazilian has been an integral part of this Chelsea side and he definitely start at the CAM spot tomorrow.
STRIKER – DIEGO COSTA
Costa suffered a knock during the last CL game against Schalke, but the Spaniard is expected to be fit and start against Gus Poyet’s side tomorrow. Bring on the Goals!
