CSKA Moscow and Ivory Coast striker Seydou Doumbia has been a target for Chelsea and other Premier League clubs for a while now.
According to reports, Seydou Doumbia almost joined the Blues this summer and if the Daily Express is to be believed, there is a lot of interest from a host of top European clubs in the striker for a move in the coming January transfer window.
Speaking about his future, Seydou Doumbia said in an interview,
“I am talking with CSKA about renewing my contract, but there is interest in me. There is a lot (of interest) from England, Spain, Germany and Italy. However, I am under contract at CSKA, so I have to talk with them too.”
Seydou Doumbia recently scored a brace against Manchester City in the Champions League, with the match eventually ending in a 2-1 win for CSKA, leaving City’s hopes of progressing to the knockout stages hanging in the balance. With such good performances, he has inevitably caught the eye of several European clubs. From the Premier League, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool are all reported to be interested in the 26-year-old.
Rated around 25 million pounds, Seydou Doumbia has 60 goals to his name from 92 appearances for CSKA in the Russian Premier League. He has won the top scorer award in the Russian Premier League twice, once in 2012 and then in 2014. He is also the current Russian Player of the Year. With such records to his name, he will be a fantastic goalscoring addition to any team.
For Chelsea in particular, a striker like Doumbia could always provide healthy competition to the brilliant Diego Costa. Moreover with Costa’s niggling hamstring injuries, such a player could do a lot to add to the squad. Doumbia’s agent Bernard Betryison said,
“We are currently in negotiations over a new contract. There is plenty of interest in Seydou from England, plus clubs in Spain, Germany and Italy. He is a goalscorer and there aren’t many of them around. However he is contracted to CSKA and the clubs will have to pay their fee.”
Doumbia’s current deal runs out in 2016 but according to reports, and CSKA Moscow have opened talks over a new contract. However, Doumbia wants to listen to all the offers he gets from other clubs before signing a new long term contract with CSKA. He has a release clause of 25 million pounds in his current contract, and CSKA might be willing to listen to offers in that region.
