Chelsea FC 2014/15 Season Analysis
It has been one of the best starts to the season. With 9 wins and 2 draws, Chelsea are occupying the top spot in the EPL table. Apart from EPL, Chelsea are occupying the top berth in Group G of the Champions League.
Chelsea seems to be competing not only on the domestic level but also on the European level. If the level of consistency is maintained by Chelsea, they could just win the long awaited treble. With some superb attacking football, with the likes of Costa and Hazard and beautifully crafted assists from the Spaniard Cesc Fabregas, Chelsea is the force to watch for this season.
Chelsea is currently blessed with two of the best goalkeepers in the world with the likes of Thibaut Courtois and Petr Cech. Courtois has established his spot as the last line of defence with some amazing SPIDERMAN-esque performances with the Blues and also while on loan at Atletico Madrid. However, this has caused Petr Cech to occupy the bench and lose the spot that he had ruled for about ten years. Apart from these two goalkeepers, the third keeper is the experienced veteran from Australia i.e. Mark Schwarzer, who has playing experience for nearly two decades in the Premier League.
The Chelsea defence has been rock solid with John Terry being the stalwart of the defence line and Gary Cahill being the pillar. The notable feature of the Chelsea defence has been the amazing chemistry between Terry and Cahill. Kurt Zouma has been a real surprise package. The young defender is playing well and stepping up whenever situation demands.
The full backs have been extremely industrious and consistent as well, especially Cesar Azpilicueta occupying his Unconventional left back spot and winning important duels by stopping crucial crosses and even by stopping opposition player’s runs on the flanks. Branislav Ivanovic has been instrumental in developing attacks and even netting a few goals himself. Filipe Luis has made left back a more attacking option and has brought fluidity to Chelsea’s gameplay. The full backs have linked with midfielders and wingers absolutely effortlessly. However, one question that is looming largely on the minds of Chelsea fans is who will replace John Terry.
The Blues’ midfield boasts of some really talented craftsmen of the ball. They can carry; they can hold, they can score, they can create chances. Ramires has been such a wonderful package since his arrival and has been occupying various roles namely defensive mid, midfielder and the right flank, but DM is his USP and he is doing really well with Matic.
Nemanja Matic, what a talented signing he has been. Since his return to the Bridge, he has been exceptional. Matic has been one of the best players so far this season with his short passes, long balls and interceptions.
Fabregas and Oscar have a real smooth gameplay and the way they interchange their positions while on the ball and during counter attacks is commendable. While Oscar has been scoring some crucial goals, Fabregas has been assisting the forwards superbly. Mikel has always been the unsung hero of the heart of midfield. His short passes, interceptions and vision are top class. He has been a really tactical super substitute, and Mourinho has used him to absolute effect.
Chelsea’s flanks consist of some of the best wingers of the world namely Eden Hazard, Willian and world cup winner Andre Schurrle. Eden Hazard has been awesome this season, and he has risen up to every occasion. He has shouldered all the responsibilities of the club and delivered. Hazard has been the gateway between defence and attack. He has linked majestically with Azpilicueta. He has been providing crucial balls to Fabregas, Oscar and Costa.
Willian, the Brazilian beast has been strong and quick whilst netting one goal and assisting one. Willian has linked very well with Ivanovic. Andre Schurrle has been playing extremely well, and his dribbles are good too. He has shown moments of greatness. However, he hasn’t always converted it. He is also a good backup option as a striker. The Egyptian, Mohammad Salah, has been quick, but he is pretty raw and falls down the pecking order compared to other options.
Chelsea’s forward has been ruthless with the likes of Brazilian-born Spaniard Diego Costa netting 10 goals in just 9 PL matches, which is one heck of a feat. Loic Remy and Didier Drogba have been really good. Drogba has shown age is just a number, and it doesn’t matter to the game. He has been a classic as always. Loic Remy has been a decent backup and has scored once in his 3 games out of which he started only once.
January Transfers Rumours
Khedira is the major talk of the town these days with Real Madrid letting Sami leave the club for free. He can partner Matic in the defensive midfielder role. He has attracted interest from Chelsea and fellow London rivals Arsenal. There has been some rumbling about Pique leaving Barca as he doesn’t fit into Luis Enrique’s playing style and has attracted interest from Manchester United and Chelsea.
Patrick Roberts is an English footballer playing for Fulham. He has attracted interest from all the top notch English clubs and the possibility of him joining Chelsea is maximum. Varane is being touted as the ideal replacement for Terry and Mourinho would want to pounce onto this player and look for a grand reunion with this very talented lad. Mattia Destro is also heavily linked with Chelsea. Destro could be used as a good backup striker as Drogba has reached the twilight phase of his career.
This January, Chelsea might see the departure of Petr Cech as he is eyeing a starting spot with Euro just around the corner. Ake, Salah and Baker might be loaned out. Schurrle might leave this January as he is attracting interest from PSG, Monaco, Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich. The move of Hazard seems unreal but with Real Madrid interested in the talented Belgian, one never knows what is in store.
