Spanish defender has revealed that he turned down a “great offer” to return to Chelsea this summer.
The 33-year-old was at the Chelsea Football Club for just a season and played a major part in getting us our first Premier League title, has revealed that he turned down a lucrative offer by Chelsea FC to stay back at Atletico Madrid.
Tiago was strongly linked with a Chelsea move this season after refusing a new contract from Atletico Madrid, but took a U – turn to join the last year Champions League.
The Portuguese star is a key player for the La Liga champions, and the midfielder explained that Simeone played a major part in keeping him in Spain this summer.
He told AS:
“The summer was very difficult. I want to explain [to] the fans what happened but there are some things that I can not explain because [they] are not important.
“At the end of last season, I received a great offer [from Chelsea] and it made me think about making a change.
“But I realised that the most important thing was to feel important at the club.
“I spoke to Cholo [Simeone] and he told me he wanted me in the squad in the next training session.
“From then, I could only think of rejoining Atletico and wearing this shirt again.
“I am happy and grateful to everyone and to the club for having me back. I will give everything on the pitch to return their efforts.” (Source: Yahoo Sport)
