As we prepare to tackle Schalke 04 in a Group G qualifying fixture tonight, one of our key operatives could be our Brazilian midfielder Ramires.
On Saturday, when he came on at half-time against Swansea City, his introduction changed the game.
Therefore, it wouldn`t surprise me if Ramires started this evening as Jose looks to use his energy and running to inject that little something extra into our play.
Ahead of the game, Ramires has spoken about the need to get off to a good start in the group, remarking to the media,
“To open the Champions League at home is always demanding and against a rival like Schalke we are expected to win. These matches are complicated but Chelsea want to get quickly through the group phase. The challenge for the squad is clear: Nine points in the first three matches.”
“German clubs are hard and difficult opponents. Germany are world champions and the clubs mirror that success.”
It`s important that we expect a tense match from the first minute. We never believe things will be easy in the Champions League and especially against German clubs because f the historical rivalry.”
“It is normal that Chelsea are one of the favourites for the Champions League, because of the history of the club, the money and the level of the squad.”
“But we are 100 per cent professional and the attitude in these matches is the same as it would be for the final.”
Ramires as we all know, was suspended for the 2012 final in Munich but it will never be forgotten that it was his wonderful goal, in the Nou Camp, that set us up for that marvellous night.
Let`s hope he can be as influential this season.
