Chelsea FC bought few new faces in the summer 2014-15 as manager Jose Mourinho looks to build a team for the next decade. One of them was French under 20 International Kurt Zouma.
The defender joined the blues from AS Saint-Étienne on a five-and-a-half-year contract from french ligue-1 for a fee estimated to be around £12 million.
Kurt Zouma, Chelsea & Seasons Expectations 2014-15
We now look at what chelsea can expect from this highly rated young Center Back who is believed to replace club Captain John Terry in the future.
Name – Kurt Zouma
Date of birth – 27 October 1994 (age 19)
Place of birth – Lyon, France
Height – 1.90 m (6 ft 3 in)
Playing position – Centre back
The 19yr old made his early impression as a blue when he scored on his Chelsea debut last night in the Capital one cup clash against Bolton Wanderers, which ended in a 2-1 victory.
Zouma was rated highly from several Premier League clubs last summer despite being banned for 10 games in November for a rush tackle which resulted in a broken leg and a dislocated ankle for Sochaux midfielder Thomas Guerbert but Jose Mourinho made a phone call to Zouma personally convincing him to come to Stamford Bridge.
However, this season Zouma’s first team chances will be limited as he is expected to play a fringe role starting mostly in the cup games as Jose is unlikely to change his 1st choice established center back pair of John Terry and Gary Cahill.
“When I was at Saint-Etienne, and I didn’t play, I immediately got upset. But I learnt.”
“Now there are senior players, stars in my position, and they are doing a great job. I take my time. I am learning besides those defenders. I know my time will come.”
“Jose Mourinho told me: ‘Rafael Varane, I made him start against Manchester City. You have to be ready to play at any moment.”
“I am using Varane and (Eliaquim) Mangala as role models. Nowadays they are in the French team, and I hope to join them.”
“Euro 2016 is an objective I set to myself. Even if it will be very
difficult to get a position, the door is not so far away.”
–Kurt Zouma Speaking to L’Equipe earlier this month
There is always a feeling in the supporters to see Zouma succeed in the blues defense for years to come and the 19 yr old center back has certainly got the potential to succeed under the guidance of Jose Mourinho.
Zouma is already in to show his capabilities in the opposition box in set pieces scoring a goal last night from a Oscar corner. In his defensive duties, Zouma made some mistakes though in pre season friendlies that make it tough for him to get regular 1st team starts under Mourinho but in the cup games it’s his chance to prove his worth this season.
There are few young center backs in the blues ranks with likes of Tomas Kalas, Kenneth Omeruo who are loaned out for this season to gain some game time and experience to prove their capability to make it to the blues 1st team in the future, so there will always be competition for Zouma at the highest level which may help him to thrive in his role in the future.
