Former Chelsea defender has revealed that he holds no grudges against Jose Mourinho after their relationship became strained at Real Madrid. Former legend was part of Mourinho’s all conquering side in the Portuguese manager’s first spell at Chelsea.
Speaking to Brazilian sports outlet Globosporte the 36 year old Ricardo Carvalho said that he understands the position that Mourinho was in during that time. The former Portugal international realised that he had just come back from injury and that the manager had explained to him he couldn’t change the defence to accommodate him.
The Chelsea coach explained to Carvalho to say that he wasn’t what he needed for the team which the defender had to eventually learn to understand. He revealed that this was a difficult time in his career as he had always been a starter with all the teams he played for and therefore he did find the situation difficult.
“During the last year and a half at Real Madrid I did not play. It was a difficult moment. I was fine with it, I had no problem. He explained the situation. By the time I returned fit after injury, Mourinho told me once that he could not change the defence, because all players had been with him, and I was not what he needed,” said the former Chelsea star.
Carvalho was part of the backbone of the Chelsea team in the mid 2000’s and he formed a formidable partnership with John Terry in the centre of defence. In his first two seasons at Stamford Bridge the former Porto player won two Premier League titles with the club under the guidance of Mourinho.
