The Blues started the Premier League campaign on August 19 in the best of ways possible. They have played three matches of the current campaign and sit atop the league table with nine points and the best goal difference, despite Mourinho erroneously awarding the top spot to their next opponents Swansea City.
The undoubted star man for the team has been newcomer Diego Costa, who has hit the back of the net four times in the first three outings. Despite amazing performances and competition from fellow Blue Francesc Fabregas, he has been bagged the Barclays Player of the Month Award for his match winning goals in all three games that he has played so far.
On winning the trophy for the best EPL player for the month of August, Costa had this to say:
“I’m very happy to win this award. It is important to begin well at a new club and I’m pleased with both my start to the season and also the team’s, which is the most important thing.
‘I hope to continue scoring goals to help out the team and keep making our fantastic supporters happy. I thank my team-mates as they have helped me win this award.”
The trophy is awarded to the best performing player for every month and winning the trophy in the first month of his maiden year at Chelsea FC goes a long way in illustrating Costa’s ability to score goals for the Blues. While people were saying that he needs some time to find his rhythm, they are now touting him for the golden boot thanks to his scintillating start to the campaign. His performances in front of the goal have given some much needed teeth to the Chelsea attack that was among the best in terms of creating chances last term but squandered too many of them, courtesy a former #9.
The other nominees for the Barclays Player of the Month were:
- Cesc Fabregas
- Nathan Dyer, Swansea City
- Gylfi Sygurdsson, Swansea City
- Andreas Weimann, Aston Villa
Surprisingly enough, Swansea and Aston Villa are the teams that sit right below Chelsea in Premier League Points table. Swansea are behind with only the goals difference while Aston Villa sit in third spot thanks to a patchy start by Manchester City, who lost to Stoke the last time they played at the Etihad. Long may this continue.
