Having started the season in style, Chelsea played out two 1-1 draws consecutively, one with Schalke 04 in the Champions League and one against Manchester City at the Etihad on Sunday in the Premier League. However, Chelsea still maintains their unbeaten start to the season and are league leaders, with four wins and a draw from their five matches in the Premier League. Chelsea have collected 13 points from a possible 15.
Bolton Wanderers, on the other hand, are going through a rough start, having lost five of their eight matches in the Championship, drawing two and winning only on one occasion against Rotherham. However, they have won both their games against Bury and Crewe Alexandra to make it to the third round of the Capital One Cup against Chelsea.
Having played two important matches within a period of just five days, a lot of the first team players are expected to be rested. Jose Mourinho had already said before the Manchester City game that he would be resting Diego Costa for this match as he is not 100% fit due to a hamstring problem, paving the way for Loic Remy to make his first start for the club. Also, the likes of Eden Hazard, Cesc Fabregas, John Terry and Thibaut Courtois will, in all probability, be left out of the starting line-up, with John Obi Mikel, Kurt Zouma, Andre Schurrle, Filipe Luis starting. Youngsters like Nathan Ake and Lewis Baker may also feature. Veteran goalkeeper Petr Cech will most likely be given the nod between the sticks, having not played a single minute of this season.
Bolton manager, Dougie Freedman, to is expected to make alterations to his side for their visit to Stamford Bridge. Former QPR goalkeeper Paddy Kenny may make his debut for Bolton while defender Kevin McNaughton and midfielder Darren Pratley may too start. Striker Jermain Beckford, who scored twice against Crewe Alexandra, may start while Mark Davies may also feature in the starting XI.
