Champions League: Schalke Captain Howedes to miss Chelsea match

Schalke have confirmed on their Official Website that Club Captain Höwedes will not play the opening game of the Champions League for Schalke against Chelsea

News has come out that Schalke 04 have landed in London and have started their preparations for the Champions League Clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Their is a good news if you happen to be a Chelsea Fan, not so much if you root for Schalke. The news that has been revealed by Schalke Website is that German World Cup winner and Schalke captain Benedikt Höwedes will not be lining up against Chelsea.

The Schalke team has already been suffering a lot in their domestic Bundesliga matches, and if the last result is anything to by they are going to have a hard time at the Bridge. Monchengladbach put four past a Schalke defense and now with Benedikt missing the game through a Hip Flexer injury, it may spell doom for the German Side, who lost the corresponding fixture by a margin of 3 goals last year.

The news report further states that Höwedes hasn’t travelled with the team to London and hence is unavailable for selection. Schalke already had noticeable absentees in the form of Brazilian defender Felipe Santana and Cameroonian Joel Matip. This injury to their captain only serves to pile further misery on an already depleted squad. Jan Kirchhoff is another doubt for the German Visitors and it would take something really special from the likes of Dennis Aogo to stop a Chelsea strike-force which is on fire at the moment.

Chelsea go into the game on the back of an unbeaten record in the Premier League that has seen records being broken by new comer duo of Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas. With no Cup tied players like was the case with Nemanja Matic last season as well as Salah, and with a fully fit Squad Chelsea are expected to go with all guns blazing for the opener. Once a good start is under the belt then team can be shuffled a bit for the Maribor and Lisbon games.

Experts peg this Chelsea team to be the most balanced and impactful of all that have participated in the Champions League, and with the possibility of a third trophy for the Special one expect to see Chelsea at their best.

On a personal note, I want Cech to start the game, what about you? Tell us in the comments below.
