Match Preview: AFC Wimbledon vs Chelsea
Chelsea kick-started their pre-season with a 5-0 win at Wycombe Wanderers on the 16th of July. Tonight Chelsea play their second friendly against League Two outfit AFC Wimbledon in Kingsmeadow, London. These two sides famously met in the FA Cup semi final in 1997 with Mark Hughes and Zola on the scoresheet winning 3-0 for the Blues.
While still most of the first team players are yet to join the training due to their participation in the FIFA World Cup, John Terry, Nemanja Matic, Mark Schwarzer and Branislav Ivanovic, all of whom featured in the last match, are available for selection. The youth team players are expected to feature heavily again, with John Swift, Lewis Baker, Andreas Christiansen, Beeney, Jeremy Boga, Jay De Silva, Solanke all doing well while Nathan Ake grabbed a fine assist from left back. Izzy Brown grabbed attention with two spectacular goals.
Returning loanees Lucas Piazon, Nathaniel Chalobah and Oriol Romeu did well with the latter earning a three year contract extension while Patrick Bamford scored the first goal for Chelsea this season with a fine first-time finish and will look to impress Jose Mourinho once again. Todd Kane, who was injured and had to be substituted due to injury in the last match, will be replaced by Ola Aina. Marco Van Ginkel who missed almost the whole of last season with an injury, is expected to do well this season and will most likely start. New signings Diego Costa and Filipe Luis are not eligible for selection as yet.
With Wimbledon losing their first pre-season match 3-0 against Margate, it may well be another thumping win for Chelsea.
