Filipe Luis, Chelsea, 2014/15 Season Expectations

Filipe Luis has signed a three-year contract with Chelsea to complete his transfer from Atletico Madrid to the London based club for a free of around £15million.

Filipe Luis will don the number 5 jersey which had been vacant since the departure of Micheal ‘bison’ Essien. He will also join the Chelsea squad for their European tours next week.

After signing for Chelsea, Filipe Luis visited the Stamford bridge with his better half and his son. The 28year old was delighted to sign for the team led by the ‘special one’ as he tweeted:

“Proud to announce that I’m officially a Chelsea player. See you all at Stamford Bridge. 😉 #CFC”.

The advantage of having Filipe Luis to the Chelsea squad is that, Luis provides the high stamina and high fitness used for Mourinho’s game plan. His recent performances has clearly reflected how the player works his socks off in defense. Moreover the attacking intent, forward runs and overlapping runs provide a vantage point for the team to launch counter attacks. Filipe Luis, has also been a consistent performer and plays as a traditional LB who focuses mainly on the stability of team through defense and moving forward only when in case of a counter attack . Aged just 28, Luis can still give his best for the blues for the next 4-5 seasons. There are no major weaknesses in the player’s game, which is a fairly rare thing to say about fullbacks in the modern game.

There’s nothing flashy about his attacking, he’s rarely going to wow you with his marauding runs down the left flank or flashy dribbling, but he often finds himself in the right area to receive the ball and advance it to the edge of the box.

Filipe Luis comes into the Chelsea squad to replace Ashley Cole, who left the blues after eight seasons at the club. Filipe Luis has also been a prominent figure for Atletico Madrid and has been one of the most consistent figures in the Atletico Madrid back four that conceded only 26 goals all season as they broke the Real Madrid – Barcelona duo and won the La Liga title and reached the Champions League Finals. Luis is expected to play as the permanent LB for Chelsea dismantling the make shift Ceaser Azpilicueta who will move to his traditional RB position. Chelsea have moreover solidified the LB hole in signing a world class player and a consistent performer in Filipe Luis.

With the Chelsea fanbase having fallen in love with the simple efficiency of Cesar Azpilicueta’s game, Luis will likely be another cult hero at Stamford Bridge in relatively short order. He’ll have new teammates to gel with and new competition to learn, but if he manages to do so and play at the same level he has for the past two seasons in Spain, he’ll make it easy to move on from Ashley Cole.
